Aleph5 lecture at Universidad de Monterrey
For Pi Day, Aleph5 delivered the lecture “The importance of mathematical modeling in industry” at UDEM: where mathematics is used and what makes a problem complex.

During March, Aleph5 took part in the lecture series organized by Universidad de Monterrey (UDEM) to commemorate Pi Day. The lecture, delivered by Eduardo Cantú (Director of Thinking and Solution Approach), was titled “The importance of mathematical modeling in industry” and aimed to highlight the advantages of this kind of solution when applied to problems across industries.
Where is mathematics used?
Mathematics brings a unique approach to solving complex problems in any process or industry. Some of the examples presented:
- National electric system: in utilities, planning the national electric system means determining energy supply at a country level, considering the logistics network and different generation types (solar, wind, and others).
- Oil & gas: opportunity areas include water-well maintenance, reservoir maintenance, and optimizing oil and gas extraction.
- Financial optimization: mathematical models support purchasing, distribution, and sales decisions to guarantee the liquidity needed to operate.
- Patient monitoring: for patients on ventilators, analytics autonomously identifies patterns and pathologies of interest to medical staff.
What makes a problem complex?
- Many aspects: complex problems involve many factors — for example, the economic and the operational sides of a business.
- Dynamic environment: you solve with today's information, but the situation changes and everything must be solved again under new conditions.
- Uncertainty: there is always a degree of uncertainty, and it must be considered in the solution.
- Multiple actors: several people's interests must be reconciled.
With this participation, Aleph5 hopes to have motivated the use and application of mathematics to solve complex problems.
